Who we are

Our project, generously funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is based at Coventry University’s Centre for Peace and Security. Led by a team of social scientists, including Professor Sariya Cheruvallil-Contractor, Dr Kusha Anand, Dr Hafza Iqbal, and historian Dr Jordan Brown this team specialised in the intersections of gender, political activism, and social history, with a particular focus on economic history and the contributions of marginalized groups.

Dr Cheruvallil-Contractor and Dr Anand have explored how race and identity, particularly within Black and Muslim communities, affect adoption and social work practices in the UK. Their findings reveal how these identities are often underappreciated or overlooked, with significant implications for the well-being of children in the care system. Through this oral history project the aim is to highlight these crucial experiences in the care system and contribute to a better understanding of identity in social work practice.
